Created/dedicated as per personal communication with Edna Woodward, (Hyles euphorbiae, June 24, 2012); June 25, 2012 Updated as per James P. Tuttle's The Hawk Moths of North America, June 25, 2012 Updated as per BAMONA; June 25, 2012 |
Please help me develop this list with improved, documented accuracy by sending sightings (species, date, location), preferably with an image, via email to Bill Oehlke. I do not have confirmed reports of all of these species in Johnson County, but I (WO) expect they are present.
This page is inspired by and dedicated to Edna Woodward who sent me the beautiful image
of Hyles euphorbiae, top of page.
Edan has sent beautiful images from many of the western states.
Please also send your sightings to BAMONA, an excellent on-line resource. As of June 25, 2012, no Sohingidae species are confirmed by BAMONA as flying in Johnson County. I am sure there are many species there which simply have not been reported.

Enjoy some of nature's wonderments: Saturniidae cocoons. Cocoons of these giant silkmoths are for sale in fall and winter. Large, beautiful moths emerge in the spring and summer.
