Sphingidae of Mexico

Xylophanes falco, Zacatecas, Mexico, courtesy of Jean Haxaire copyright.

Although I believe these "tribal" checklists contain only species within Mexico, I fully expect there are omissions and/or improper entries. If you have corrections to offer, please contact
Bill Oehlke at oehlkew@islandtelecom.com.

I have most recently (March 13, 2004) updated this checklist against that provided by Dr. Manuel Balcazar-Lara at http://cgic.ucol.mx/~mabl/SphingidaeWeb/Genus1.htm, and have also updated individual files to reflect information in Kitching and Cadiou, 2000.

Many thanks to Ben Trott who has sent outstanding images of larvae from Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico.

On February 24, 2007, I received this very nice image of Pachylia ficus from Roberto Marcel Valencia.

Pachylia ficus, Minatitlan, Veracruz, Mexico, courtesy of Roberto Marcelo Valencia.

I indicated to Roberto that the moth is Pachylia ficus and he sent me additional images:

Pachylia ficus brown form, courtesy of Roberto Marcelo Valencia.

Pachylia ficus immature, courtesy of Roberto Marcelo Valencia.

Pachylia ficus green form, courtesy of Roberto Marcelo Valencia.

In late September, 2011, Paul Hoekstra has begun to send me images from Yucatan: Agrius cingulata, Manduca sexta, Xylophanes pluto, Xylophanes tersa. I will link the images, with dates, from respective species files.

This website has been created and is maintained by Bill Oehlke without government or institutional financial assistance. All expenses, ie., text reference support material, webspace rental from Bizland, computer repairs/replacements, backups systems, software for image adjustments (Adobe Photoshop; L-View), ftp software, anti-virus protection, scanner, etc. are my own.

I very much appreciate all the many images that have been sent to me, or of which I have been granted permission to copy and post from other websites. All images on this site remain the property of respective photographers.

If you would like to contribute to the maintenace of this website by sending a contribution to

your donation would be much appreciated and would be used for
1) paying for webspace rental;
2) paying for computer maintenance and software upgrades;
3) purchases of additional text reference material (journals and books) in anticipation of expanding the site to a worldwide Sphingidae site;
4) helping to pay my daughter's tuition; with anything left over going to humanitarian aid.
